America’s Cup For Next Gen

If you have been reading about Red Bull Youth America’s Cup, do not confuse this tournament with the Louis Vuitton Cup tournament which is in its 35th series.

This is a new series that has been started for young sailors in the age range of 19 to 25. This series will target young sailors and recognize talent in this age group who can participate in international regatta events. There have been twelve teams identified for the tournament this year that is also being hosted in Bermuda.

Oracle Team USA is the defending champion for America’s Cup and would be mentoring teams like Team BDA as well as Next Generation USA who would be representing America in the 2017 Red Bull event. For this year’s event about twenty teams have been registered and six have been confirmed.

Hence the youth tournament will have six teams contesting as well as six teams for the main event. Bermuda has been chosen for the sailing events for both tournaments. It is known that the waters in this region in summer offer conditions that are perfect for sailing. The water remains flat and winds are favorable. Great Sound in particular is a famed venue for such events. America’ Cup has had earlier versions of this site as well. Again, for the foiling catamarans that are used for sailing in these competitions the waters are found to be ideal. The boats have a height of 45 feet and offer challenges that are dealt well in these waters. The boats also work at great speed, usually moving at 35 knots. That is also something that the race venue needs to accommodate, especially with several vessels sailing at close range against each other. Every team will have six members on board before the qualification rounds begin in Bermuda.
